Merimée, Prosper
► (1803-70) Escritor francés. Lo mejor de su producción son las novelas: Matteo Falcone (1829), Colomba (1840), que tienen a Italia por escenario, Crónica del reinado de Carlos IX (1829), novela histórica, La Venus de Ille (1837) y Carmen (1845), su obra más conocida, curiosa deformación del pintoresco ambiente español.

Cuentista y dramaturgo francés. De joven fue alumno de idiomas y literatura y escribió su primera obra de teatro, Cromwell (1922), a los 19 años. Sus pasiones eran el misticismo, la historia y lo inusual. Sus relatos, la mayoría historias de misterio, estaban inspirados sobre todo en fuentes españolas y rusas, particularmente Alexandrer Pushkin; se destacan Mateo Falcone (1829), la colección Mosaïque [Mosaico] (1833) y las novelas cortas Colomba (1840) y Carmen (1845), en la cual Georges Bizet basó su ópera. También escribió sobre historia y arqueología, ficción histórica y crítica literaria y mantuvo una variada correspondencia, que se publicó póstumamente. Fue elegido senador en 1853.
